Oh my! Thank goodness that didn’t happen when Ace ran into my leg. I had a nice bruise but he didn’t break my shin. When my two are outside running and chasing toys or each other you better stand clear cause they will run over anything or anyone in their way. When I take them to my parents to run because they have a much bigger yard we have to keep them tied up with a rope because they run off. Now this a a nylon rope hooked to one of those ground posts that has the spinning top right at the top of the post. They probably have about 100 ft each on their rope. So When they go after something or are just chasing each other they have plenty of line to wear themselves out lol. Well sometimes Ace gets a bit rough so we have to stop him. I went out to get him in the middle of the yard (mistake) he thought it was game and took off well then Kira was right behind him and I got my ankle rope burned and almost fell on my rear! Yeah it was not cool, my mom came out and got them settled down as I unwrapped my ankle. Nothing is like to pits 50 and 60 pounds running at full speed giving you a rope burn! At first it looks red then it burns like crazy and scabs up its horrible and always leaves a scar. So from now on you NEVER go out in the yard LOL.

That is good that you are doing your research. I can tell you that just a regular pit raised from a puppy when you first get it in a good enviornment is time consuming. Taking in a troubled pit is even more time consuming. First and formost spay the mother. You don’t know her background enough to breed her. I’m sure your vet reccomended that anyways. You are going to want to baby her and feel sorry for her but remember she is a dog and spoiling is ok to a point but when dealing with a powerful breed always have RULES and make sure they know your the BOSS not them. I rescued a pit from the humane society in my town and he was raised there. I felt so bad for him for spending the first year of his life in a kennel. He was so skinny and nervous. It helped I had a pit already that was close to his age. He came home and was there an hour and then all was fine. He has become the best dog ever and protects me like no other. You can tell sometimes that is troubled from his past. But we work through that and he is getting better. I treat my two pits like my kids but I have always been VERY firm with training them. You have to have a firm stern tone in you voice when traing them. At the same time it needs to be loving so they know you care becasue a dog especally pits want to make you happy. Also see how the mother is with other dogs. Some times abandoned dogs enjoy other dogs because they are lonley. If she was abused though she may have a fear of everything until she trusts it. My friend has a pit that was abused by the owner and their kids. So she hates dark skinned people and kids she goes nuts like she’s going to eat them. Test the waters in a safe controled environment. I also want to tell you since you are new to pits be extremley prepared for people to talk bad about your dog and scold you for having one. Ignorant people are mean sometimes. So now as a Pit owner it is you job to prove them wrong just like everyone on this site. Study your breed, get advice, socialize, train, and love your pit and you will have the greatest friend you could ever find. I could go on forever so if you would like more information on being a first time pit owner of a rescue and new puppy you can email me at [email protected] I would be glad to help.

I have so many funny stories from my pits. The are real characters. They say dogs don’t understand when human talk to them but I really think my two know exactly what I’m saying. The other night my mom was sitting on the couch eating a chocolate cheese cake and Kira was sitting on the opposite couch. She had previously been sitting by my mom but my mom told her to get down cause she was eating. She was now sitting down by my feet on the couch and just glaring at my mom in hate.(like how dare you kick me off my couch this is my house)So my mom called her over and she tilted her head back with her nose in the air like ha yeah right. She then lowered her head and buried half of in the pillows and looked at her like how could you tell this face no. We just laughed and laughed. She eventually got over herself and laid with my mom. Also at night if she needs something or needs me she will just sit tight up against me and glare at me until I wake up. It is the freakiest damn thing to wake up in the middle of the night with the dog staring at you. LOL

    Reece’s Mommy,
My guess is a bath won’t help. When Kira gets bored you can turn around and she will have a crator dug in my backyard. I live in Ohio so when in the spring mostly and any time it rains really good it will be nothing to open the back door and she meets me with mud caked paws. grrrr. Most of the time I just use baby wipes to clean the mud off of both my pits feet but when she gets the caked on she gets carried straight to the bathtub and her feet get scrubbed. She hates it but she STILL digs. I don’t think there is an answer to be honest with you. LOL good luck Amber

Wow I would report that! That’s crazy. I know when I
Adopted Ace which he’s a full pit from my local humane society they had to do a meet and greet with my other dogs and I had to show proof of insurance coverage and have a home evaluation before he could come home with me. I live in Ohio and we have BSL here and yes it truley violates constiutional rights and they are trying to fix that now but it sucks. I did everything to make sure I could get him and I did. What they did was wrong I would report them if you could.

I have a question for anyone…. I have been buying the nylabone with the mint in the middle so its green in the middle and the creamy color on the ends. The seem to be lasting for a month or so but I can’t tell if Kira (my main chewer) is actually eating it or it just get worn down from her constant chewing. Is it safe or should I stop giving it to her? Also I noticed some of you have said you use bully sticks and real bones or hooves. Are those safe for them to ingest? My guess is no but I was just wondering what others had to say. I had also posted earlier about my male pit Ace destorying his Kong. Well I got him the x-large size and now he loves it. I put the Kong filler in it and he goes crazy of course he expects me to hold it for him lol. But I think the first size was to small for him.

Psalmopoeus, I agree with you on the site is to help pit owners. Not to force negitive information. I hate the I know more than you attitude. Which mentioned above some on here think they have. Most people on here are educated on thier dogs it they aren’t then they ask simple questions for advice, which is what this site is for! I agree and disagree on the bloodline having a personality of the dog but to each his own. I just watched the new episode of Dogs 101 on the Animal Planet and they had experts speak on the dogs and they did a great job explaining the breed.

    Chelsea,
You should be able to do a google search of NC for bsl regulations or something close to that and it should give you some websites that will list counties or cities that have bsl. I know it works for Ohio because I did it. If all else fails you could look up law enforcment in Charlotte and call and ask. It couldn’t hurt.

Rollergrrl I am so glad I’m not the only one that is annoyed with Big Red’s posts. Doesn’t it seem like he is a poor advocate for the breed when all he does is say how dangerous they are and NO ONE does their research. I have looked at most of these posts and read his and the funny thing is they are ALL negative. It is funny how he thinks that people are getting mad because of his opinions do agree with some but they don’t agree with ALL and after reading the same repeat crap over and over you would think he would just SHUT UP about it. I agree with you and Armywife completely. Regardless of poor breading or not I resuced my one pit from the humane society and the other I got from a friend. It sounds as though he is SUCH A GOOD trainer/owner that he can’t take the challenge of a troubled dog LOL. Oh well maybe oneday he will get over himself and post something postive. LOL

I’m with you Rebecca and Raleigh. I feel so gulity leaving mine crated all day. But I get up in the mornings and if they get up with me then I let them out to play but most mornings I have to wake them up cause they are just lazy bums lol. I let them outside to play and potty while I get ready. Then when they come in they know they get a treat and their bones in their beds so they go right in them no problems. I go home for my lunch hour and they go out and I play with them unless they would rather play with each other. I eat lunch and let them run around. Then they go back to bed with kongs filled with peanut butter stuff and I get home at around 5:15 and they go out and come in and eat and they are happy as can be. They are finally use to this routine and do just fine. I think it’s harder on me to leave them then it is for them to be crated lol.

I have noticed that alot of you use Kongs or Nylabone. I see that some use rawhides too. I was told by my vet that she doesn’t recommend rawhides because the dogs body can’t digest them properly and they can get stuck in their intestines and things. I have given my dogs pig ears and they love them they usually last about 10min. A nylabone last them a few months usually. Kongs are only fun if they have something in them lol.
