After reading Athena09’s post. I have a friend that no kiding has 7pit bulls. None of them are fixed! They complain everytime the girls are in heat. They only have 3 males and the rest are female. The one female I think they were going to fix because she has a double nipple and behind it is a large hernia so it is to dangerous for her to have anymore puppies. I believe she has had two litters. My mom did get one of their puppies and she is a good dog really. I would say they are your backyard breeders where its always and accident when they have a litter. When the girls are in heat they usually crate rotate everyone for potty time and free time. Its ridiculous the pain it is to do all that just because her boyfriend doesn’t believe in fixing them. He says it’s cruel. They have had some beautiful pups though. I have to give them props for the fact that they have rescued all of them from abandoned homes and bad abusive owners. I pray they don’t ever get in trouble or caught though because they live in the city limits of Lima where I live and Lima ordiance states only one pit per household. They also don’t have the registered with tags. Course if they did register them then the Dog Warden would know how many they had and where they lived. I wish they would fix them but what can you do. I would never ever dream of turning them in they are good owners and people. They just have too many dogs and its not their fault the law is so damn stupid.

I forgot one thing to tell you and this might happen if Athena hasn’t had a kong before. My male Ace had never had one either and I got him the larg size first and put treats in it and treats in Kira’s. Put them in their crates and went back to work. Well Ace had no Idea what to do with it and how the treats would come out so being the smart ass he is he ripped it unitl the hole got bigger and then the treats came out.LOL So I thought well maybe the bigger size will be better. I got the XL and it works better. Also the Black Kongs are more durable than the Red and they just started making these blue ones too that actually show up on x-rays if the dog eats it. She will love them trust me. Kira is so intense of a chewer no joke at all. I keep nyla bones in their crates while I’m at work all day. I let them out on my lunch hour and then when I get home in the evenings they go out, eat, then she grabs her bone and chews for hours. But her teeth are the cleanest teeth I have ever seen in a dog. You doesn’t have a speck of tartar.

Right on girl. Its sucks and can be stressful to be breaking the law cause you don’t wanna be that kind of person but when they are descriminating you kind of have too. People say America is the Land of the Free but Ohio (where I live) has it actually written in their state law that pit bull type dogs are deemed “vicious”. I live in the only state that has the law written in our state laws. Other states here have ordiances and bans on the breed but they are only in certain cities or counties not the entire state. I somewhat have a double whammy because my city has an ordiance on top of the states. ERRRRRRR! However I do get by with just the stat law because even though my address is Lima I don’t live in the city limits I live 3blocks north of it whew! If you get a chance look up Ohio BSL regulations for the US and you will see what I mean. The ridiculous crap I have to do to walk my wonderful pitties. Granted you can’t be seen with yours outside. I’m sorry for that. I meant the law standards for the state minus I don’t muzzle them when they are on walks or in public because I feel it is cruelty to animals. My thoughts to law makers on that one is you wrap something around your head so you can’t open your mouth and breath properly especially on a 80 or 90 degree day and tell me how it feels!!!!

Sounds like your pit was previously in a bad situation involving humans. But on the other hand your Min Pin has had you all to his/her self. Small dogs like Min Pins get very possessive I know from the Chihuahua that was mine when I lived at home and now is my Dad’s. My parents also had another Chihuahua that got hit by a car about 4yrs ago and he was super possessive of my mom. When he was laying by her no one not even my dad or me could touch her or when we got near her he woudl start growling. I hate little dogs their so damn mean sorry I know you have a Min Pin and those are so cute and proud of themselves when they walk around lol. Ok anyways back to the problem. They BOTH need to learn to share you not just the Pit. Teach them BOTH that when one is in your lap the other must wait. Be very firm about it and eventually they will learn what is going on.

I don’t know if your new to pits but they are extreme chewers. My female Kira is my crazy chewer so I feel your pain. You sound like my mom when it comes to toys. She says that’s crazy to spend almost$ 20 on a toy. But if you add up the money you have to keep spending then it actually isn’t so bad to by the extreme chew toys. I understand you buy stuffed toys at garage sales but you can’t tell me it’s not a pain to have to constantly pick up the messes. I know first had it sucks. So I buy no stuffing animals only when they are on sale. One piece of advice from experience with the kong is my male Ace is 60bls and he destroyed the large size kong but does great with the xl one. Kira is 50lbs and she does great with the large one. Another great durable toy is the black nyla bone or the one that’s green in the middle and mint flavored. You can get those at Meijer for 12 bucks. If I can help anymore you can email me I’d be glad to help.

I think you should take him to obedience. The place I went to granted I’m in Ohio on the other side of the country but there was no fail really. Keep in mind that if you go into a situation with the attitude of failing you will fail. I have learned with my two pits that when meeting other dogs or being in a crowd and things don’t let yourself get worked up and over alert to where you are jumpy. It makes the dogs nervous and fearful. Don’t go into the situation feeling that something bad is going to happen. Yes be aware that it could happen but not because you have a pit bull but because the other dog or dogs could be aggressive. My male Ace is afraid of my parents chiuaua Oreo. She is extremely bitchy when it comes to other dogs. If a dog looks at her wrong its teeth bearing and growling. She jumped off the couch one day at Ace because he walked up to sniff her and he jumped from the patio room up two steps to the living room. It was so funny cause the look on his face was like man I didn’t do anything whats your problem. So I would get him into obedience and be patient it will come.

Well I have a rescue and non rescue pits. Kira is not a rescue but she’s not a top bred dog either. I have had UTI problems when she was a puppy and a poor immune system leading to herititary mange a little onintment and she’s all better. Kira also has food allergies which I have found to be rather common. Ace is a rescue I adopted him this past January. When I got him he was very thin and they were feeding him puppy science diet with fish oil. His gas was horrible he could litterally clear a room hell even the house. So per adoption he had to go to the vet and I was telling her. She said he most likely has mild to moderate IBS. Ugh. So I put him on Iams proactive lamb and rice. He immediately gained weight and the gas is gone. He is happy and other than that and some mild skin allergies with grass. Adopting is a great thing but be prepared to have potential health problems. Skin allergies are no big deal and are not terribly expensive to care for. Also keep in mind they don’t fully mature until around 2yrs. Just do your research well on the breed and remember some people will swear they are advocates of the breed but speak about nothing but how they were born fighters and how they turn instantly and it the breed not the owner that controls the behavior. Fyi they are wrong so read up on them talk to others that own them and most importantly know if your city has bans or ordinances for the breed. You are more than welcome to email me for more info I would be glad to help.

Since she seems ok with other dogs especially small dogs she probably has a thing with Max she doesn’t like. I wouldn’t say its the Pit in her its something about him she just doesn’t like. It could even be that when she was at her previous owners a bigger dog attacked her or something similar. Me and my ex-husband had a dog that he took with him that was a cocker spanial lab mix. She was a medium dog and not aggressive. The neighbors dog always gets loose and runs the neighborhood. Ellie was out side on her rope and that dog got loose and attacked her in the face. She was scared to death at first but then became very intolerable of Kira and Ace when they came along. She absoulutely hated Ace when I got him. If she was laying on the bed and he got up there she would jump up and growl at him like get out of my bed I’m warning you. She moved with my ex thank god. But after getting attacked she was different and more aggressive.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned you are doing something wrong. She probably is one that wears her feelings on her shoulder. The only thing I would recommend is don’t baby her too much when she pouts after you teaching her being to rough and biting is not allowed. It could turn against you later on. One thing about this breed I have noticed is babying them is not a good thing because they are so powerful. I’m not saying they will turn on you or anyone at all thats not what its about. I’m saying that they learn to maniupulate you so easy to get away with bad behaviors its not funny. Sometimes my two have tried it in the past and have learned now that dont’ fly. Keep in mind though that timid scared dogs can bite because they are frightened. That is any dog not just pits any dog will do that. She just needs to learn to trust you give it time she will.

Well it sounds like you have a rough story. I know they do need lots of exercise but making her tired isn’t going to change her aggression issue. My 2 can run their hearts out for hours then just when you think ok their done they take off wrestling again. My mom has a 9mo female pit who water doesn’t work she love the hose. It sounds almost like you need to see a one on one trainer and you may think this is crazy but even a Ceaser type person. I know some people don’t like him but I use some of his techniques and they work. I mean you know he does have pit bulls him self and has helped many who were on their last straw. I don’t think theirs any advice that you can do on your own. One thing I’m curious about is how she is with other dogs that don’t live with her?

I have the exact issue with Kira. If you seen the news clip on facebook of my two pits Kira did her favorite thing to the reporter. Kira is CGC certified meaning she shouldn’t jump. Well she forgets so easily because she is so excited. My technique of control is a spray bottle (water only of course). Works like a charm. All I have to do is grab it it can even be empty and she stops in her tracks. When people come in my house it is halarious to watch her. I have ignore her and just sit down. Well she will sit next to them and stare quitely then every time they look at her and don’t pet her she skoots alittle closer still staring the look is priceless. Then they pet her and its over she’s ok then she out attention we just laugh she’s a dork. But anyways try the spray bottle and when you start training with it say off no don’t use down because that is the command for laying down. Good luck

Hey there. Glad to see you on the site hopefully you find the fourms helpful. They are nice to see what everyone has learned from their expriences. Well you have a good combination for a chewer. Both breeds are known for chewing. You mentioned she has basic obedience. Did you take her to obedience classes or did you do the training on your own? I’m not against doing it on your own but I have noticed with this breed actually putting them in classes really helps the socialization and also makes them understand better that you are in charge. My mom has a female that is 9months old she is already over 50lbs and a solid mass of muscle. She is very nippy and will not listen to my mom. She is male type dog. She will do anything my dad tells her to do and she follows him around everywhere. When I tell my two no or they start to get wild or over excited to someone coming in the house. I get a spray bottle (water only of course) and they get sprayed. Similar to a cat. When training them you want to say no when you spray so they put the two together. Within the first couple of times they got the message and now I just grab the bottle and they stop immediately. It’s funny because people are amazed at how they react. I only smack if there is an exterem reason for it. That would be me taking a shower and when I get out I find my pillows shredded all over the house. Keep in mind those pillows didn’t just appear overnight they have been there forever. Usually though the voice and water bottle is enough. If she loves water like my moms pit then the spray bottle may not work. In that case I would try the dominating part standing up to her and showing her that her doing that is not going to phase you and you will not back down so it’s best she does. She is still small so this might work for you too. As crazy as this sounds I actually bite them back! I read along time ago that biting a dog on their ear shows them dominance. Once I put it into action believe it or not it worked. Kira bit me once while wrestling and I had told her to calm down and she didn’t stop so I grabbed her held her down and bit her ear. She yelp and looked at me like mom damn I can’t believe you just did that. She never did it again. There are a few things you can try hope they work. Also keep in mind if when she growls and lunges at you you change your “energy” and become afraid because she might bite or does she will sense that and know she’s winning the battle (not good).

Thanks for the clarification so is that not crazy then? I never knew about these things until I reasearched the breed and bought Kira. The good and bad is I am not one to keep my mouth shut sometimes. So maybe I should move lol. Just kidding!

I know I can pick every last stick up in the back yard and I will look and here comes Kira with a freakin stick again. She mostly likes to just shred them not so much eat them. It will look like a wood chipper has been there when she gets done with them lol.
