yup. same stories. lol. naw. you are soooo not alone… i live in Tacoma. my mom is an AKC judge, and even SHE has had to deal with the labels that a given to certain dogs. not the animal as an individual, but the breeds as a whole. i think too, that a lot of how a pet acts is on the owner. not the dog. yeah, some dogs are just wired wrong. breeding, disposition, just not OK in the head because of the breeding background, NOT the breed itself. the AKC is a strong voice in the pure breed realm, but also in the dog world as well i think. hell, i was attacked by a basset when i was 2, so, its all about the breeding background and how they are wired. sounds weird but in most cases its true. A LOT is the owners deal though. Being an attentive pet parent. Knowing where your dog is, and what they are doing. making sure that if you KNOW that your dog is aggressive that you keep that dog on a short leash. those poor dogs are labeled now, just like pits were and dobermans and rotties too…and all that owner had to do was watch their dogs.

she should go watch my home vids that i have on facebook….she would laugh so hard….i agree with going and researching. take it slow i think. the puppy, after all is still just a puppy. lots of time to let everyone grow with your new puppy and for your pup to grow with you. 🙂

ooo…i just got my lab/pit mix and we start basic obedience in January. his brother is going too. its the best thing for the both of them. the one we are going to is really not that expensive. i looked around a while before choosing them too. BOTH my dogs are very high energy, as most pits are. basic obedience will give them a boundary that you can control. the new dog we got, Bruce, is a nipper…he likes his toys, but he like to play rough too. he jumps a lot and gets overly excited. sucks sometimes because we want to play but not with him trying to tackle us. we end up pushing him off us and walking away.what we have been trying to teach him is that the tug toys are for the rough stuff. and when he tries to jump, we take the toy away and walk away from him. its easier said then done, but we try different things. with us putting him in classes, we are going to try to focus his enthusiasm on something different. i would love to put him in agility events. he IS a good person-protector too. lol.

we had a couple mastiff stories here in the northwest. when i heard about the attacks that had happened, the very first thing i ask was “where were the owners?” the yard was fenced, but this was the second time they gotten out and attacked someone. so now its up to the city of Seattle to deal with whats going to be done. if they had been monitored and their owners been out there with them it would never had happened. i don’t understand why its hard for some doggie parents to be responsible owners and just do right by their pets. my babies are always with us when they got outside no matter what. they never go off leash unless they are in the dog park or with us in the house. they never run the yard unless we are out there with them.

    just don’t make sense.

we just started our two on Acana Grasslands and are going to rotate with the Orijins Regional Red. Both are a grain free food with meat being a base food. Most of the pet store bought food like iams is grain-based. taste of the wild is also a grain free food and i hear is good also. both are compairable and on the pricey side but with all the benefits in feeding them really GOOD product, Im thinking it will be worth every dollar we spend on it. there is a really good artical on the home page about the best dog food to feed pit bulls.

some dogs urinate when they get overly excited. other reasons too is a sign of being submissive to you or another dog. gotta figure that you are his pack leader, hes going to be the low man on the totem pole. Its also a sign of greeting. They see someone that they really want to please, or who intimidates them, they pee. Also, young dog really dont have all that great bladder control. . They get excited when they see you and yeah…you get pee. If they get in trouble, they pee too.Im reading this book called “The Secret Lives of Dogs” and its says “Unless your dog is still a puppy, its unlikely that she’s going to learn to control her bladder any better. But she can learn to control her emotions generally. The less excited she gets, the less likely she’ll be to make a mess. By far the best way to teach dogs to control their exuberance is to teach them basic obediance. Dogs who have learned to listen for instructions are generally calmer then those without any training”. The book is so interesting to read.

maybe you could invest in some training classes for her and for yourself. there are places that can help with behavior issues such as sepreation anxiety. trainers that are really good with helping with getting her to a point of being comfortable with being there alone. if you can afford it then that could be the way to go.

When we got Bruce, he was eating Pedigree. He was so gasy and just about stunk us out of the car the very first day. His coat was dull and he had dry areas. KoKo has the same coat problem. Dry areas that are itchy. Sooo…we got both on Iams. Then we talked to the office girl at the vet and SHE said that because of the fillers in the food we have been giving them that they are probably having an allergic reaction to some of the stuff in the food. She fosters pits and says she uses Blue Buffalo. I did some research and we have introduced Acan Grassland blend to their diet. I like the fact that its grain free. The base ingredient is Lamb. Orijins Regional Red is the other one we are going to rotate it with. That is also grain free. THey both LOVE the Acana. I cant wait to see what their coats are going to look like.
