Abraham Lincoln once referred to the “Better angels of our nature”. I’ve seen glimpses of this, but the world needs more.

I admire your courage. Animal abuse is directly linked to violence against people. Shame how much violence is ignored because the victim is an animal.

Skin issues are common in pitbulls. Allergies are a problem for this breed. Even something as simple as overgrooming. A pitbull’s skin can get dried out from too much bathing, which removes their natural skin oil. I use a gentle, oatmeal based shampoo for my pitbull Herman, who has similar issues. I hope some of this helps you. Good luck and Congrats on your new family member!

Resource guarding should be adressed immediatly. Taking the object from her is only a temporary fix. The behavior is conerning in itself. “Claiming” your space and everything in it is important. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating strong handed methods. Simple assertivness is the best way to do this in my opinion. A calm but firm approach, with positive reinforcement at the core of the training is always best. I would humbly suggest you study the issue of “Resource Guarding” and seek a long term solution. Pitbulls are smart and eager to learn. Good Luck. Hope you can get to the root of the problem.

You might also want to try contacting local vet schools. I’ve heard that some vet students need animals to work with and are sometimes open to working with you on cost.

Have you tried googling low income vet assistance? I did this awhile back and found multiple results. I’m living paycheck to paycheck also, and had a recent scare with a mysterious growth on my pit Herman. Thankfully, it was not cancer. I hope this helps.

Welcome KPCato! my pit Herman eats fast too, so I can relate. Have you tried a “Eat Slow Bowl”? The food bowl is made with large protrusions inside. Duke would have to eat around the the protrusions, thus, in theory at least, Duke would need to eat more slowly. They come in different makes & models, and if I’m not mistaken, metal, safe types of plastic, and even ceramic. Correct me if I’m wrong. I hope this helps.

Amen! I can’t speak to any specific health conerns related to tail docking, but I do know that Love is a powerful medicine. Personaly I’m opposed to any surgery done soley for astetic purposes. However, whats done is done. Every Pitbull needs love. You have chosen a great breed that can be your best friend, tail or not. I hope you and your new buddy have a wonderful life together.

Bummer about all the stuff you’ve tried that has’nt worked. I hope you find something that does. You have obviously tried everything I can think of. I have empathy for you & your dog, as we share the same paw licking problem.

Herman licks his paws also. I have tried “Gold Seal Sea Meal” powder with his food and it helped a little. Contacting your vet is a must in my opinion. I was lucky enough to find a local vet that owns a pit-mix himself, and has a great deal of expertise in bullys. Habitual chewing can sometimes lead to infections, your vet could tell if that was the case. I feel you on the $$$ thing. My pockets are not deep either. The costs can be scary. I wish you the best.

Hi Missy. I give my pitbull Herman “Taste of the Wild” brand food. It comes in several different flavors & is grain-free. Without knowing your dog, I can’t say this is the answer, but it has helped Herman alot. People food is an issue with my dog also, so that may be a problem as well. Hope this helps.
