Pit Bull Vs American Bully: Main Differences

Origin Of Breeds

Going by the full name American Pit Bull Terrier, the Pit Bull emerged from the cross breeding between the old English Bulldog and English Terrier, around the beginning of the 19th century. Originally from Europe, Pit Bull was initially used for bull baiting, ratting and bloody dog fights, hence the erroneous fame.

Originated from the United States, the American Bully is the mixed breed of several breeds, including the Pit Bull. However, despite having emerged between 1980 and 1990, the American Bully was only recognized in 2013 by the United Kennel Club (UKC).

Muscle Structure

Although both breeds are very strong and muscular, the American Bully tends to have more jumped and toned muscles. Also, thanks to its most striking features — broad and deep chest — they appear stronger and athletic. In addition, the American Bully has strong bones, something else that contributes to the image of muscularity.

Whereas for the Pit Bull, they also have an athletic build, but its musculature is not as evident as that of the American Bully. So much so that you need a specific exercise battery and also a food supplement to make them appear more muscular.

Size And Weight

In terms of size of Pit Bull vs American Bully, the two dogs do not differ much. The American Bully and Pit Bull can reach up to 53 cm in height, with the female being smaller in both breeds. However, when referring to weight, the situation changes a lot.

The American Bully weighs between 25 and 45 kg, being much heavier than the Pit Bull. The Pit Bull usually weighs between 13 and 34 kg. This weight difference makes Pit Bull looks smaller and much more muscular , something that makes it easier to differentiate between these two breeds.

Coat

The coat of the two breeds is very similar. In regards to the coat color, both breeds can have different shades such as white, caramel, brown, piebald, and among others. Additionally, both have short coat length and share commonality with the shine.

However, there is one difference on the coat that sets them apart — the coat texture. Typically, the American Bully’s coat has a rougher feel, whereby the pit bull has smoother and softer fur. Apart from this minor detail, everything else is pretty much the same.

Head, Paws, And Tail

These are three body parts that look similar at the first glance, but when you look closely between both breeds, there are some differences.

Firstly, the head. The head of an American Bully is quite remarkable. They’re square in shape, are voluminous, and very striking. To the contrary, the pit bull’s head is more rectangular, with a medium size, being a little wider in the region of the ears.

Pit Bull vs American Bully

As for the paws, Pit Bull tend to have longer paws than the American Bully, although the differences aren’t actually that noticeable.

Lastly, when it comes to the tail, the American Bully’s tail is smooth and of medium size, whilst Pit Bull has a curved tail in relation to the body. Even so, it is possible to see some with a slightly longer one, running away from most for both breeds.

Energy Level

When comparing the energy of American Bully and Pit Bull, the former certainly wins. Even so, this doesn’t mean that the Pit Bull has a low energy level. In fact, Pit Bull also loves to play and run. Also, you still need to give their daily dose of exercise in keeping the Pit Bull in shape.

As for the American Bully, they can be highly energetic and hyper that they require plenty exercises and walks. For this reason as well, any American Bully’s owner needs to start giving them training since puppy and have a firm hand. Otherwise, this highly energetic dog will end up messing up a good part of the house.

Training

American Bully is quite the opposite. Even though they are also affectionate and devoted to the owner, American Bull can be quite stubborn and has quite a temper. This sort of personality is the main reason that prevent them from having an easier training.

Hence, if you decide to get an American Bully, keep in mind that you will need to put more effort, patience, and firm in their training.

Life Expectancy

Despite the proximity of the races in many aspects, from appearance to origin, their life expectancy differs slightly. The American Bully lives about 10 to 12 years, a time considered low compared to other breeds.

In the case of Pit Bull, life expectancy goes up a little, being between 12 and 15 years. However, these numbers are not absolute. The life expectancy of both Pit Bull and American Bully can be longer or shorter, depending on the dog’s quality of life and health.

Final Thoughts
