Most pit bull owners don’t feed canned foods exclusively. The reason is simple: its cost. But when they do, of course they wan the best wet food for pit bulls.
Feeding a 60 pound pit bull a diet consisting of nothing but quality canned food can easily run upward of $180 a month. Most of us are trying not to spend quite that much on dog food.
But when you buy canned food in bulk, the price gets lower, and you get the best quality food.
Kibbles are dry, and dogs eat more food than the wet version. Pit bulls need a specific high protein formula to provide enhanced nutritional and mineral support.
The following list of canned food offers you the products you can give to your pit bull to fulfill their needs. First we will look into the top choices and then we will describe the ones for specific diets.
Let’s start!

3. Purina Beyond Wild Prey-Inspired High Protein Beef, Liver, and Lamb Recipe
When you have a pit bull that just loves to run, stroll and play all the time, providing adequate energy ad protein becomes a real problem. If your dog needs high protein and enjoys beef and turkey along with chicken, this canned food is the perfect source of high-energy food with muscle strength and growing support.
Organ meat provides vitamins and mineral support to the dog for higher immunity. If your pit bull is recovering from trauma, surgery, or an accident, this food is just the right thing to provide a nutritional blend for overall health. The good thing about this food is that it doesn’t increase your dog’s weight. With this food, you can have a happy and healthy dog having an ideal weight.
4. Newman’s Own Organics – Beef, Liver, And Beef & Liver Varieties

If your buddy is in need of minerals and vitamin support, the organ meet with the added supplements is a great food source. Many pet owners use this food to increase the taste of dry kibbles.
If you have a fanatic eater at home, dry kibbles and other foods are not a good source of making them feel satiated. With the help of beef broth, organ meat, and no grain formula, you can make the dog at ease. The food will stimulate a full tummy sensation after every meal, and your dog won’t bite or chew the things they are not supposed to.

But now, this product has gone through a radical transition and has all the active ingredients to make it stand tall in the list of regular canned food. It is a good daily food source for your pit bull with six different variations. You can choose the type according to the needs of your pet.
But you must remember that if your best buddy has a problem with yeast, do not go for this food. Some variants have passive yeast and can cause problems for your dog. If the dog is ill or fighting a disease, this food is a safer version for your best buddy.
6. ZiwiPeak– Daily Dog Cuisine Formulas
You need a different formula if your dog doesn’t feel well after eating canned food. This is just the right thing for the dog suffering from a gastric issue. This formula is human-grade food that comes from all-natural ingredients. Human grade is the term that means this is safe for human consumption; that’s why it is highly safe for canine consumption.
Using this food will increase the health and immunity of your best buddy. This all-natural formula offers good taurine if you want to keep your dog happy and free from allergens. It comes in the form of protein and the needed fat from a natural source. It doesn’t let your dog gain weight or go obese.

Canned Foods vs. Dry Foods
A quality canned food has certain advantages over dry food:
- Kibble must contain a certain percentage of starch or the kibble pieces won’t hold together, while canned foods need not contain any carbohydrates.
- Even the highest quality kibbles typically contain rendered meats in meal form, but canned foods can contain only fresh meat.
- Since the canning process functions as a preservative, canned foods do not require added preservatives (as long as they remain unopened, of course).
- Canned foods are easier to digest than the concentrated, dehydrated ingredients found in dry foods.
- Canned foods are generally far more appealing to dogs than kibble.
Canned Dog Food Evaluation Criteria
There are two types of canned dog foods: formulas that meet the criteria for 100% complete and balanced nutrition and can be fed by themselves, and formulas that do not constitute a complete diet and are meant to be added to kibble or fed only intermittently.
Initially we planned to limit our recommendations to the former, but since most people with large breed dogs use canned foods primarily to enhance the palatability of kibble and to add variety to their dog’s diet, we will be including recommendations for both types of canned food.
All recommended canned foods meet the following criteria:
- Ingredients are human-grade; i.e., approved for human consumption.
- Food contains primarily high quality meat or fish; plant foods, if present, are included only in small amounts.
- Food does not contain questionable ingredients such as soy protein concentrate, wheat gluten, sweeteners, cheap fillers, etc.
Complete All-Meat Diets – Can Food
The following canned foods are all meat or fish except for vitamin and mineral supplements and small amounts of extras such as natural thickeners, texturizers or flavors.
These dog foods can be fed as a complete diet. They are listed in no particular order.
1. ZiwiPeak – Daily Dog Cuisine Formulas
Canned foods don’t get much better than these all-natural, species-appropriate formulas from New Zealand.
Ingredients are 100% human-grade, and meats are grass fed and ranch raised without hormones and antibiotics.
Each variety features a blend of muscle and organ meats, tripe, green-lipped and blue mussel, flaxseed oil, and vitamin/mineral supplements. You won’t find any grains, vegetables, fruits, or other carbohydrates in these foods.
Available in 4 varieties:
- Lamb – Lamb muscle meat, lamb organ & tripe mix (liver, tripe, heart and kidney), green-lipped and blue mussel, carrageenan, minerals, guar gum, flaxseed oil, sodium tripolyphosphate, and vitamins.
- Venison – Venison muscle meat, venison organ & tripe mix (liver, tripe, heart and kidney), green-lipped and blue mussel, carrageenan, guar gum, flaxseed oil, sodium tripolyphosphate, minerals and vitamins.
- Venison & Fish – Venison muscle meat, venison organ & tripe mix (liver, tripe, heart and kidney), fish, green-lipped and blue mussel, carrageenan, guar gum, flaxseed oil, sodium tripolyphosphate, minerals and vitamins.
- Tripe, Lamb and Venison – Lamb tripe, venison tripe, lamb and venison muscle meat, green-lipped and blue mussel, carrageenan, sodium tripolyphosphate, guar gum, flaxseed oil, minerals and vitamins.
The combination of muscle meat, organs, and tripe in each formula is outstanding, and the New Zealand mussel is great for your dog’s joints. Unfortunately these foods are very pricey.
2. Newman’s Own Organics – Beef, Liver, and Beef & Liver Varieties
Newman’s Own Organics has come out with three grainless super premium canned formulas.
The ingredients aren’t just human-grade, they’re certified organic (except for the vitamin and mineral supplements).
The ingredient lists are delightfully simple and straightforward:
- Beef – Organic beef, organic beef broth, plus vitamin and mineral supplements.
- Liver – Organic beef liver, organic liver broth, plus vitamin and mineral supplements.
- Beef & Liver – Organic beef, organic beef liver, organic beef broth, plus vitamin and mineral supplements.
We love the absence of any food additives (including natural thickeners such as guar gum and gelling agents such as carrageenan that are commonly found in all-natural super premium brands).
In fact, we rank the Beef & Liver formula, which combines muscle and organ meats, right up there with ZiwiPeak, and it’s far more affordable.
3. Weruva – Kobe and Kurobuta Formulas
All Weruva canned foods are of the highest quality, but the Kobe and Kurobuta varieties are especially recommended due to the fact that these formulas are all meat except for small amounts of guar gum (natural thickening agent) and the vitamin and mineral supplements needed to make these foods complete and balanced.
Weruva uses only the best human-grade ingredients, and all meats are fresh, free-range, and raised without hormones and antibiotics. Better yet, the turkey and chicken in Weruva formulas are certified organic.
What really makes Weruva unique is that their foods are manufactured in a state-of-the-art human food facility, not a pet food plant.
The company maintains that it’s not just the ingredients that are human-grade, the end product is too! Weruva canned foods are considered safe and fit for human consumption.
Your pit bull will love these ingredients:
- Kobe Yume – American Style Kobe Beef, organic chicken, organic turkey, beef broth, guar gum, complete vitamins and minerals.
- Kobe Master – American Style Kobe Beef, beef, beef broth, beef liver, guar gum, complete vitamins and minerals.
- Kobe Gyro Lamb – Lamb, American Style Kobe Beef, beef broth, guar gum, complete vitamins and minerals.
- Kurobuta Pagoda Organic Chicken – Organic chicken, organic chicken broth, Kurobuta Berkshire Pork, guar gum, complete vitamins and minerals.
- Kurobuta Hero Organic Turkey – Organic turkey, organic turkey broth, Kurobuta Berkshire Ham, guar gum, complete vitamins and minerals.
If you’re looking for the highest quality canned dog food, you won’t go wrong with Weruva. We have heard nothing but out-and-out raves about this brand.
4. Merrick Grain Free – All Formulas
Before Grain is a human-grade pet food brand made by Merrick.
The canned formulas are 96% meat. Before Grain canned foods were originally designed for supplemental feeding, but the formulas have been updated to include the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals needed to transform them into a complete diet.
Before Grain canned foods are available in six varieties:
- Beef – Beef, beef broth, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Buffalo – Buffalo, water for processing, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Chicken – Chicken, chicken broth, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Salmon – Salmon, water for processing, whitefish, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Tripe – Beef tripe, beef broth, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Turkey – Turkey, turkey broth, dried egg, yeast extract, salt, guar, carrageenan, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
We feel the quality of the Before Grain canned formulas, while solid, isn’t quite as high as our three preceding all-meat diets, and we have some reservations about the use of yeast extract in these foods.
We suggest you avoid this line if your pit bull has yeast-related health problems. While yeast extract does not contain an active form of yeast, some of its components can nonetheless exacerbate yeast overgrowth conditions.
The consistency of these formulas is somewhat watery (think thick gravy instead of meatloaf). On the plus side, buffalo is an excellent meat for canines, and dogs love the Before Grain Buffalo variety in particular. We’re not aware of any other all-meat buffalo dog foods.
The Before Grain line is somewhat less expensive than our other recommended all-meat foods.
Complete Meat Diets with Vegetables – Can Food
The following complete and balanced canned foods consist primarily of meat but also contain small amounts of vegetables. They are listed in no particular order.
1. Weruva – All Varieties Except Kobe and Kurobuta
In addition to the previously recommended all-meat Kobe and Kurobuta formulas, Weruva makes several delicious canine entrees that contain small amounts of veggies and, in a few cases, a little bit of rice.
Avoid those if your pit bull is sensitive to grains. As always with Weruva, all ingredients are human-grade and all foods are fit for human consumption. Meats are free-range and hormone/antibiotic-free.
The following grain-free varieties are available in addition to the aforementioned Kobe and Kurobuta formulas:
- Amazon Liver – Chicken (boneless and skinless white breast meat), water sufficient for processing, chicken liver, potato starch, sunflower seed oil, xanthan gum, vitamins and minerals.

The following varieties include very small amounts of rice (gluten-free grain):
- Funky Chunky – Chicken (boneless and skinless white breast meat), water sufficient for processing, carrot, rice, green pea, potato starch, sunflower seed oil, xanthan gum, vitamins and minerals.
- Jammin Salmon with Chicken – Chicken (boneless and skinless white breast meat), salmon, water sufficient for processing, potato, tomato, green pea, rice, potato starch, sunflower seed oil, xanthan gum, vitamins and minerals.

Some of these entrees look and smell so good, you may be tempted to try them yourself!
2. Party Animal – All Grain Free Formulas
Party Animal is a certified organic gourmet pet food company making several excellent grain free canned dog foods.
But it goes a step beyond human-grade with ingredients that are USDA & OCIA International certified organic.
A comprehensive breakdown and analysis of every ingredient used in these all-natural formulas (including the few ingredients that are not organic) is required by the third-party organic certifying agency, providing dog owners with an unprecedented level of safety and reassurance.
All ingredients used by Party Animal are grown/raised without antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, bioengineering (GMO), and artificial additives. Meats come from free-range, drug-free animals raised on organic feed.
Party Animal formulas feature a single meat source and simple, wholesome ingredients, making them a great choice for dogs with food allergies or gastrointestinal issues.
All Party Animal foods are guaranteed not to contain chemical preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, genetically modified ingredients, sugar, dairy products, soy, corn, or wheat gluten.
The following eight grain-free varieties are available:
- Blazin’ Beef Recipe – Organic beef, organic beef broth, organic sweet potatoes, organic cranberries, organic guar gum, organic olive oil, vitamin and mineral mix.

- Jammin’ Salmon Recipe – Wild caught salmon, water sufficient for processing, organic sweet potatoes, organic blueberries, organic guar gum, organic olive oil, vitamin and mineral mix.
3. Dogswell – Happy Hips and Vitality Formulas
Dogswell makes two excellent lines of grainless canned foods: Vitality and Happy Hips.
Ingredients are human-grade and meats are from cage-free chickens and ducks and free-range cattle and New Zealand lamb raised without antibiotics and hormones.
The Vitality line is marketed as a “spa treatment for your pet” with flaxseed oil and vitamins A and E for healthy skin, coat, and overall health, while the Happy Hips formulas are fortified with glucosamine and chondroitin to help maintain healthy joints.
However, it’s not clear that the Vitality formulas actually contain more flaxseed oil and vitamins A and E than the Happy Hips line. As for the glucosamine and chondroitin added to Happy Hips formulas, one can contains 140 mg glucosamine and 82 mg chondroitin.
If you fed Happy Hips exclusively at a rate of one can per 20 pounds of body weight, your pit would receive sufficient glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health maintenance/prevention.
However, adding the occasional can or half can to kibble won’t deliver enough of these supplements to have much of an effect.
Skin and joint supplements aside, each line features three excellent formulas:
- VITALITY Duck & Sweet Potato Stew – Duck, chicken broth, chicken liver, chicken, dried egg product, salmon, peas, potato starch, sweet potatoes, carrots, red peppers, guar gum, natural flavor, cranberries, blueberries, spinach, zucchini, canola oil, garlic powder, flaxseed oil, squash, and assorted vitamin and mineral supplements.
- VITALITY Chicken & Sweet Potato Stew – Chicken, chicken broth, water sufficient for processing, chicken liver, dried egg product, salmon, peas, potato starch, sweet potatoes, carrots, red peppers, guar gum, natural flavor, cranberries, blueberries, spinach, zucchini, canola oil, garlic powder, flaxseed oil, squash, and assorted vitamin and mineral supplements.
- VITALITY Lamb & Sweet Potato Stew – Water Sufficient for Processing, lamb, lamb liver, beef, beef liver, dried egg product, salmon, peas, potato starch, sweet potatoes, carrots, red peppers, guar gum, natural flavor, cranberries, blueberries, spinach, zucchini, canola oil, garlic powder, flaxseed oil, squash, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
The Happy Hips formulas are more or less identical except for the inclusion of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.
4. Wellness – CORE Formulas
The CORE line from the super premium brand Wellness is grain-free.
CORE dry and canned foods are both excellent, containing quality human-grade ingredients and hormone-free meats. “Nothing in excess and everything in balance” is the motto of the Wellness brand.
CORE canned foods come in two varieties. Each wholesome formula contains five premium meats as the main ingredients plus nutrient-rich veggies and fruits:
- Turkey, Chicken Liver and Turkey Liver – Chicken, turkey, chicken liver, chicken broth, chicken meal, turkey liver, sweet potatoes, carrageenan, guar gum, carrots, apples, spinach, parsley, blueberries, broccoli, kale, ground flaxseed, salmon oil, salt, chicory root extract, yucca schidigera extract, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Salmon, Whitefish and Herring – Salmon, whitefish, herring, mackerel, salmon broth, salmon meal, sweet potatoes, salmon oil, canola oil, ground flaxseed, carrageenan, guar gum, carrots, apples, spinach, parsley, blueberries, broccoli, kale, chicory root extract, yucca schidigera extract, and vitamin/mineral supplements.
The fish formula is great for dogs with allergies to red meat or poultry, as it contains only fish.
And don’t worry about the inclusion of salmon meal. Wellness has a special permit on file, allowing their fish meal to be preserved with natural antioxidants instead of the carcinogenic ethoxyquin.
5. CANIDAE – Grain Free Salmon and All Life Stages Formulas
We like the dry versions of CANIDAE’s new grainless foods, and the canned formulas are even better. All ingredients are human-grade and meats are raised without hormones and antibiotics.
95% of the protein in CANIDAE Salmon and ALS formulas comes from several different high quality meats and fish. The remaining 5% is supplied by vegetables. Check out these ingredients:
- All Life Stages – Chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, turkey, lamb, ocean fish, potatoes, peas, carrageenan, guar gum, locust bean gum, flaxseed oil, salt, sun-cured alfalfa meal, sunflower oil, plus several herbal extracts and complete vitamin and mineral supplements.
- Salmon – Salmon, salmon broth, ocean fish, chicken liver, chicken, potatoes, peas, carrageenan, guar gum, locust bean gum, flaxseed oil, salt, sun-cured alfalfa meal, lecithin, sunflower oil, plus several herbal extracts and complete vitamins and minerals.
These formulas are not watery like some canned foods. They have a consistency much like meatloaf; you can actually cut them into slices if you want. Another big plus is the price.
6. Whole Earth Farms – All Three Formulas
If our previous recommendations have been too pricey for you, take a look at the canned dog foods from Whole Earth Farms.
This new brand was developed by Merrick Pet Foods, a family owned and operated boutique company, in an effort to offer a super premium food with human-grade ingredients at a lower price point. And we’ve got to hand it to Merrick; they’ve done an incredible job with these three canned formulas.
Whole Earth Farms canned foods are grain-free and feature five different high quality meat or fish sources including duck and buffalo as the primary ingredients. Veggies, berries, and herbs round out the rest of these foods. A couple of minor ingredients are even certified organic.
Three age-specific formulas are available:
- Puppy – Chicken, turkey broth, turkey liver, duck, buffalo, whitefish, fresh carrots, fresh sweet potato, peas, salmon meal, organic sun-cured alfalfa, dried egg, organic sunflower seed, dried tomato pomace, canola oil, cassia gum, carrageenan, guar gum, salt, dried blueberry, dried cranberry, lecithin, plus various herbs, vitamins, and minerals.
- Adult – Chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, duck, buffalo, whitefish, fresh carrots, fresh sweet potato, peas, salmon meal, organic sun-cured alfalfa, dried egg, organic sunflower seed, dried tomato pomace, canola oil, cassia gum, carrageenan, guar gum, salt, dried blueberry, dried cranberry, lecithin, plus various herbs and vitamin/mineral supplements.
- Senior – Turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver, duck, buffalo, whitefish, fresh carrots, fresh sweet potato, peas, salmon meal, organic sun-cured alfalfa, dried egg, organic sunflower seed, tomato pomace, canola oil, cassia gum, carrageenan, guar gum, salt, dried blueberry, dried cranberry, lecithin, plus various herbs, and vitamin and mineral supplements.
Despite the age-specific names, all three formulas meet the AAFCO Dog Food nutrient profiles for all life stages. If you want, you can feed the puppy formula to your eleven year-old and the senior formula to your puppy.
Incomplete All-Meat Diets – Can Food
The following canned foods are not nutritionally complete; they are intended to supplement your kibble or home-prepared diet. These canned formulas are listed in no particular order.
1. Tripett – All Formulas
Tripett foods are a favorite among raw feeders and kibble feeders alike.
All four Tripett varieties are based on one main ingredient: green tripe with gastric juices and amino acids intact. Also contains the pre-digested grasses and grains the animal has eaten.
Think of tripe (the stomach lining of ruminants) as a super health food for dogs. What makes tripe so great? Green, unbleached tripe is chock full of valuable nutrients in a form that carnivores can easily utilize.
All four Tripett formulas are 100% natural and the tripe comes from free-range, grass-fed animals. The ingredients are as follows:
- Green Beef Tripe Original Formula – Green beef tripe, water, garlic powder, vegetable gum.
- New Zealand Green Lamb Tripe Formula – New Zealand lamb tripe, garlic, vegetable gum, menhaden fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin.
- New Zealand Green Venison Tripe Formula – New Zealand venison tripe, water, garlic, vegetable gum.
- Advanced Skin+Coat Formula – Beef tripe, water, salmon, duck, garlic, vegetable gum, menhaden fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin.
You’ll hate the smell, but your pit bull will love the taste of these foods! Adding green tripe to your dog’s kibble or home-prepared diet a couple of times a week is highly recommended.
These formulas do not provide complete nutrition. They’re intended only for supplemental feeding.
2. Canine Caviar – Gourmet Beaver and Gourmet Turkey
Canine Caviar’s premium protein foods are intended primarily for use as a temporary elimination diet to diagnose food allergies, but they’re also excellent for mixing with kibble to make dry foods more appealing to sick or finicky canines.
The Gourmet Beaver diet (made exclusively from beavers killed for population control) has an outstanding fatty acid profile.
Adding a quarter can to your pit bull’s food daily will work wonders for skin and coat condition. Also great for putting weight on dogs.
The Gourmet Beaver and Gourmet Turkey diets contain ground beaver or turkey, water sufficient for processing, carrageenan gum, and cassia gum.
Canine Caviar also makes a Gourmet Venison Tripe and a Gourmet Duck diet that contain small amounts of a single vegetable source:
- Gourmet Venison – Venison green tripe, ground venison, water sufficient for processing, pea flour, carrageenan gum, cassia gum.
- Gourmet Duck – Ground duck, sweet potatoes, water sufficient for processing, carrageenan gum, cassia gum.
Canine Caviar uses only human-grade ingredients and free-range meats raised without antibiotics and hormones. Moreover, all four of these foods are made using a unique cold processing method, so enzymes remain intact!
If not fed as an elimination diet, you can add a quarter can per 40-60 pounds of body weight to your pit bull’s kibble or home-prepared diet daily.
3. Wysong Au Jus – All Varieties
Wysong Au Jus foods are pure muscle and organ meats designed to mimic the natural diet of carnivores.
Since these foods are devoid not only of grains and vegetables, but also of vitamin and mineral supplements, they are not intended as a complete diet.
Wysong Au Jus contains nothing artificial. The ingredient lists are extremely simple: The main ingredient is meat, followed by water sufficient for processing, animal plasma, and guar gum.
Available in 6 varieties: Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Duck, Rabbit, and Venison.
4. Wellness – 95% Formulas (Toppers & Mixers)
Wellness is a super premium brand making all-natural pet foods with human-grade ingredients and hormone-free meats. Their 95% formulas are 95% meat and 5% water sufficient for processing, natural flavors, cassia gum, and carrageenan.
You’ll note that these foods do not contain vitamin and mineral supplements, so they’re not complete and balanced.
Check out the CORE formulas above, if you’re looking for a nutritionally complete canned food from Wellness. The 95% formulas are intended as kibble toppers and mixers, but these premium meats will complement a home-prepared diet as well.
Available in 5 varieties: Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Salmon, and Lamb.
As far as we can tell, these Wellness formulas contain only premium cuts of muscle meat (deboned in the case of chicken, turkey, and salmon) and no organs.
For the price, you could probably find hormone-free ground meat at your local whole foods market and cook it yourself, so you’re partly paying for the convenience that comes with just having to open a can.
We do think these formulas could be improved by including various organs and ground bone for calcium.
5. Special Note about EVO and Natura Pet Products
If you’re wondering why none of the popular brands made by Natura–e.g., EVO, Innova, California Natural–have been included in our recommendations, the reason is that the company was recently sold to Procter & Gamble.
Given what has happened to the quality of other brands after being gobbled up by P&G, we are no longer comfortable recommending the previously excellent Natura pet foods.
See The Best Kibbles for Your Pit Bull for a more detailed explanation. Additionally, unlike their dry foods, Natura canned foods are not made in their own processing plant and have been affected by pet food recalls in the past.
What do you think of blue
What do you think of blue buffalo wild dog food? Peaches seems to really love it and it is primarily meat.
