potty training – strange situation

So I have a 3 month old, and he’s been doing great.  I crate train him, and he has never gone to the bathroom in his crate. I work 6-7 hours a day, and he holds it all day long, and I come home and let him out and he’s fine.  So now I know he can hold it.  But after I let him out, he sniffs around because he needs to go out ALL THE TIME.  Literally, tonight I took him out when I got home.  He peed.  Brought him in.  About an hour later, took him out, he pooped and peed.  Brought him in.  5 minutes later he peed on the floor.  I need help – I don’t understand how he can hold it all day long, and then when I’m home he doesn’t hold it at all.
