Every morning it is a battle getting Layla out of bed so i can give her a morning walk in the yard, (leashed in my own yard because my fence isnt secure). I swear she is a 16 year old girl rather than a 3 year old dog. She looks at me, complains with her sighing, vocalizations that sound like, AAAWWWW!!!! and OOOOOOOOOOO! i have to talk to her a lot to get her to get up. Yesterday morning she just would not do it. i even went sat on the floor petted her and talked to her. normally she will get up then. Nothing doing. I am not going to drag her out of her bed… so i went to work. When i returned home just as happy as pie to see me. I rushed to the back door opened it to let her out because i knew she had to…. apparently she was more interested in sniffing for lizards then chasing imaginary ones, then laying in the sun than peeing. It took her another hour to go. She didnt go in the house either. She did the same thing this morning. I dont know whats up with her LOL kids i tell ya!

So am I!!! Yeah its said what other people have done to our  breed. I always ask people if they have seen the videos from the fighting rings what they do to make the dogs mean. It says something about the dogs that they have to be tortured to make them mean. If you have to torture them, they arent really mean.

LOL actually my neighbors were walking their beagels last night and i joined them and we wound up over at their place, as per usual. My neighbor brought up again how well Layla protects her from rogue beer bottles as she puts it. LOL

Its funny i havent gotten the first moment’s grief in my neighborhood about her. Everyone i mean EVERYONE says how beautiful she is and man she is just a great dog. They let their children play with her, (she is leashed and on my hand with this occurs no chances! i dont trust children), and bring their little dogs around. When 5 or 6 neighborhood families and i were hanging out every night from the 30th through the 4th i had her with me and they all wanted to pet her they kept calling her to come to them. They DIED when she climbed into Kevin’s lap to assault him with kisses. They each have given her nicknames as well. Ive only had her 3 months and already they adore her.

I didnt intend to adopt a pit either. I like larger breed short hair dogs. when i saw her on the humane society website i was attracted to her because of that… then i saw her breed and though oh i dont know about this. SO glad i got her. She is so great.

Thats what i was thinking, or she may have been where they fought dogs, just not fighting herself. She is so sweet i hate to think of what she may have gone through.

Layla is a licking machine. She licks everything, floor, furniture, wall, etc… i dont know if it is specific to the breed or not. I know mine does the same.

It most defiantly wont take you long to have funny stories. I had the great benefit of having a letter from her previous foster family that told me what to expect and how great of a dog she is. They are wonderful dogs. They are fun and goofy like you wouldn’t believe. Layla stares at me a lot which unnerved me in the beginning but now I just see that its her thing. That’s usually followed by her wallerin all over me, pawing my face and then cuddling. At any rate im sure you will enjoy being a pit owner.

Okay so this was completely my fault, but it didn’t make me happy that she did what she did LOL I had a half gallon jug of milk that was pretty much empty and passed its expiration date. Building up to the 4th of july neighborhood block party I was in and out of my house and in and out of my refrigerators, (they were back up storage for drinks and food), a lot in a rush each of the days. Instead of throwing the plastic jug in the trash which was closer I put it on the floor in the utility room. The jug bowed out and slightly cracked giving off a spoiled milk smell. You know dogs if it smells horrible they are all over it. Well I came home one day and in my bedroom she had torn the jug to shreds. My fault completely I’m grown and know to throw stuff away properly…. Still I wasn’t happy. I didn’t scold her though just realized I was the dummy.

I had the same issue with Layla. When I adopted her from the humane society she wouldn’t get in my car. Like you I suspected it was because she was given up twice. She hated the car, that was until I took her to the vet. I know that sounds very strange but she LOVED the vet. It was just a meet and greet. She loves people and loves being with other dogs. Since she wasn’t sick she had a blast. The vet and all of the ladies in the office knew what kind of dog she is and they didn’t have an issue, in fact I couldn’t get them to stop loving on her, getting on the floor with her, and giving her treats. Before I took her to the vet I tried the treat trick which didn’t work, tried short drives in which I would just drive around the neighborhood and come home, didn’t work. Went to the neighbors several times, that didn’t work either. The vet is what did the trick. We then went to the dog groomers and went home. We were away from home a total of 4 hours. While getting groomed I had to leave her and come back to get her, (the groomers loved her too said she was so well behaved and sweet). Now if I say wanna go for a ride she jumps around in circles. I think because she went to a place that she was extremely happy, (the vet of all places), and the fact that we were in a long ride and I still brought her home made her realize that I am keeping her. Keep plugging away. Try to find a place that she is going to have a blast, take her there. Build up to a longer ride and be gone for a while. It helped my girl, maybe it will help yours. =)

She is prescribed valium and that helps somewhat if I can give it to her before the storm comes. Of course I have to know it is coming, and be home. If she is already scared the valium has no affect at all. I will look into these thanks.

Although she is scared of thunder and fireworks she is not afraid of loud power tools, vacuum, mowers, etc… it’s been a journey figuring out her needs. My house has a flat roof so you can hear the rain, (great for people), and a lot of large windows and lots of sliding glass doors. There is really no escape for her from the lightning, thunder, or rain. I tried making a cave for her in the hall to the guest bedrooms, shutting all the doors and the sliding door that separates it from the main house. The hall is small and I brought it further down by emptying the linen closet of items on the floor and filling it with blankets. 1 of the doors I kept open and the shelves are low so I thought okay it’s a space within a space perfect for her to hide. She hid there once but it didn’t help her. She is making a little improvement. If it is raining when I get home, (summer in fl this is almost a daily occurrence), I go directly to my bedroom and lay in bed she lays on the floor beside me and I pet her. This seems to help somewhat. If I let her in my bed she paces on top of me strangely beside me seems to be more of a help. If I am sitting in a chair she crawls under my legs so it makes me wonder if she doesn’t feel safer, “under” me like I am separating her from the storm.

yes however people do. there are many breeds that look similar to pits but arent. pits get balmed for their bad behavior in these statistics. people dont report a lab nipping or biting a person, they do everytime a pit does, so the statics are scewed there, and the media primarially reports pit bull attacks over all breeds.

I love all the great stories! as many of you that have commented know Layla is terrified of rain and even the most distant thunder. Fourth of july was not a happy time for her i really dont have a good house for her fears. anyway the other night we were sitting out back and apparently someone had left over fireworks they were setting off. Layla growled trotted around sounding all mean…. i opened the door and she bolted inside. lol i told her yeah you are ferocious you told them fireworks who’s boss…. before running scared lol
