When my dog was a puppy we would take him to the dog beach.  He was really good and because he would go to work everyday with my husband they are attached at the hip.  Well all hydro did was wanted to play with the other dogs while they played fetch.  So many people would leave because they thought he would attack their dogs.  After that we never went back and just decided to walk him along the regular beach early in the morning.  Well one of my neighbors would walk his dog (a black lab) along the beach and luckily he didn’t care that hydro was a pit.  They had a ball every morning playing in the water and just having fun.  I wish people would get over the stereotypes and see these dogs for what they really are; sweet, loving, obedient, and the best kissers!!  We have recently moved to the midwest to be closer to my family, but we have a german shepherd now too and they are the best of friends.

I just watched the Animal Planet documentary about this (I knew about the story when it happened) and it is disgusting, and sad.  Only two dogs were put down, one was very sick and the other was human and dog aggresive.  I don’t understand why him or his accomplaces weren’t mentally evaluated.  Most stories about serial killers state that they started off killing animals.  Who knows what he will do next.  Seeing these dogs get a second chance and new homes is really touching though.  I am glad that animal activists faught for the rights of these animals because they couldn’t speak for themselves.  Ever since I was younger I’ve wanted to start a dog rescue.  That is still a dream of mine and I hope some day we can change the minds of those who have distorted images about pits and other breeds.  Though this story is a sad one I am glad for the outcome of these innocent animals that only wanted to please their masters.

I have a pit and a german shepherd and for the most part they are great.  They do rough house some times and it is usually playful.  Some times though they do get a little carried away and have to be broken up.  After we calm them down and they have both been corrected it is usually fine.  Do they usually play?  If they do I would keep an eye on them and see who is causing the issue.  My parents have a pit as well as two labs and a lot of the time they gang up on her because she is a puppy and new to the house hold.  They will play keep away with all of the toys and if she tries to go for something the labs will snap at her and she thinks that means play time, which usually turns into a fight.  Some times playful and sometimes not.  So, just keep an eye out and see if its playful or viscous.  Also if you haven’t already I would look into obedience classes for both of them to take together.  That way they can be monitered by a professional.  Hope this helps.
