Barking at puppy

My pit bull/labrador cross is a candidate for adoption.  He visited a prospective owner yesterday and connected immediately with the humans present.  There is a 12-week-old puppy in the household.  My dog was curious, not aggressive, but he kep the puppy at a distance by barking loudly.  The pup is very energetic and approaches without restraint, even jumping up on my dog if allowed.  After 15 minutes of this, my dog would not allow the puppy anywhere near him, and barked loudly whenever the pup came within three feet.  Is this part of the meeting process, or does this indicate a likelihood that the two dogs may not get along well together?
