My pitbull pointer mix has had some allergy issues what seems to be her entire life. We rescued her at 9 weeks old and had gone through about 4-5 dry dog foods by the time she was 6 months old. She had constant vomiting, loose stool, and some skin issues. We decided to switch her to a raw diet which she has been on for about two years now. She has really thrived with the raw diet, but recently the skin issues have gotten much worse. Nothing with her diet has been switched and we’ve seen the vet on a few occasions. She has dry, scaly red patches on her under belly and dry scaly patches on her skin where the hair has fallen out. This seems to be concentrated to the hind leg area. Depending on the outbreak the hair will stick up from some bumps where the skin is scabing and flaking off. This happens on her back. She’s had medicated washes, antibiotics, and this last time a steroid that seemed to help, but as the pills decreased to one every other day she got much worse. She seems to be in good spirits, but I’m sure is irrated with all the licking, scratching, and biting! Any information you could provide would be appreciated.Thanks!My dog has had similar symptoms for the last week and a half or so. When I adopted her a few weeks ago, the vet said that new allergies can develop easily in sensitive pit bulls. Could it be that your dog has developed a new allergy to something you’re feeding her, that was ok before?
Cortisone cream and Benadryl are helping keep my dog comfortable while I try and sort out what’s wrong with her. She weighs 46 lbs, and the vet suggested I give her a Benadryl with breakfast and another with dinner. Unless your pit bull is abnormally small, that’s a safe amount. You might want to try a non-drowsy version though, otherwise your dog might just sleep all day!

I have used yogurt, plain about 1tablespoon a day and put straight aloe vera from plant leaf on the spots. This has helped with skin issues. I also only bath dogs with this issue about 1 time every two months. If needed for dirt more often, I wash with water only. Also make sure your treats are raw foods too, like green beans or carrots, as some dog treats have wheat which is an allergen to dogs. Hope this helps. Nothing worse than alergy issues. I did have one dog that ended up having to have steroid shots his whole life which shortened it by 2-3 years, but he was happy and healthy the years he was with us.
Have you tried a hydrocortisone spray for dogs. My pitbull seems to have some skin allergies, I am going to switch her food but for now the spray has helped a whole lot, decreased any scatching by 90% and all the irritated skin has begun to heal. There is also a spray called Vetericyn that heals the skin very quickly, has very good reviews.
