Alright I just got my six week old and I noticed the first time she fell asleep after about 5 mins she started twitching, I thought it was kind of funny at first cause maybe she was.havi g a little bad dream or something. So anyways i woke her up and then about 10 mins after she fell asleep again she began twitching and growling and crying/winning and opening and closing her mouth (like shes chewing something) so i woke her again. I noticed that she does it every time that she sleeps now. They in a way seem like she has little seizures. So my question.. is this normal or should i be morr.worried than i am now and take her to the vet to get checked out?? Thank you all

It sounds like pretty normal behavior to me. My 1 1/2 year old APBT does the same thing. Try using aromatherapy to make your puppy sleep more soundly. Calming scents like lavender and green mandarin work well. Just put a small drop on her neck or chest (never around her eyes or directly on her nose or mouth). If you like candles, beeswax candles smell great and are stress relieving as well. Hope it works out!

When people sleep, they do the same thing. I often twitch in my sleep a lot, especially if I’m having a dream where I’m walking up stairs and then “trip” or “miss” a step. I also twitch a lot right when I’m falling asleep; sometimes violently. In the beginning of my relationship with my boyfriend, he was extremely concerned because of how rapidly I twitched. After awhile, he got use to it.

My boyfriend also talks in his sleep, which would be akin to your dog growling/yelping.

All of those things are normal behaviors for animals and people alike. A seizure is something you cannot wake a person or animal out of. A seizure also doesn’t happen in “spurts” like a twitch will (you twitch and then you’re still for a moment or two, twitch again, etc). A seizure is a continuous involuntary movement where the patient is often (or always, I think) unconscious.

If you want to get technical…

Myoclonus (pronounced /maɪˈɒklənəs/) is brief, involuntary twitching of a muscle or a group of muscles. The most common time for people to encounter them is while falling asleep, which is called a hypnic jerk. A hypnic jerk, hypnagogic jerk, sleep start, night start, is an involuntary myoclonic twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as the subject is beginning to fall asleep. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the “jump” made when a person is startled, often accompanied by a falling sensation. It is commonly caused by irregular sleep schedules.
Sleep myoclonus occurs during the initial phases of sleep, especially at the moment of dropping off to sleep.

It’s completely normal 🙂 Just let your puppy sleep, no need to continually wake them.

My pit Sasha used to run in her sleep when she was a puppy. Sometimes she still twitches a bit and sometimes she even barks in her sleep with her mouth closed so it’s muffled. I think it’s so cute. There are times when I wake her though, like when we’re in bed and her twitching or noises wake me up. I’ll say her name and nudge her and she’ll re-adjust and sleep quietly after that.

well i am concerned because my pit breaths hard and fast in his sleep… ..  he does twitch and barks and makes sound with his teeth wich i find normal but when he breath hard its scare me because it makes me think that his having trouble breathing.   Is that a normal behavior in them?

My dog is 2,and she’s always dreamt.I always heard that most dogs stop dreaming after they turn 1. Lillie’s have gotten more vivid. The other night, every muscle in her body was twitching,AND she was growling and barking. I love watching her dream, she’s funny. not to mention the fact she snores as loud as a grown man,I wish I could record it.I would do just about anything if I could see what she’s dreaming!

I would say that all in all this is normal.

Attie dreams from time to time and she’s almost 3 years of age. Sometimes she growls and barks (under her breath) sometimes her legs jerk and she seems to be trying to run. She snores quite a bit…almsot sounds like a lumber jack….LOL She is comical….to say the least.
