Kong Classic Review

8

In Summary:

  • We can't recommend the Kong highly enough.  Ours has lasted about 3 years.
  • We use dry treats big enought to get "stuck" inside it.  Less of a mess.
  • The Kong can potentially occupy your dog for hours.
  • Our dog is adorable.

Who owns a Kong? What do you think of it?

Good review.. I agree, we got our kongs when Yami was a puppy. He is now 6. I just wish they would have made the kong red ball as durable as the regular kong toy. Our red ball only lasted about a year.

Very cute dog by the way!!

We do, however, prefer peanut butter opposed to a dry dog treat. My dogs have figured out that if they stick the whole kong in their mouth and crunch the kong with their back teeth the treat will crumble and fall right out. It only takes them about 1 minute to get the treat. Not much fun. Ha ha. Even after they get all of the peanut butter out, it will still smell like peanut butter and they will keep trying to get it out, even after its gone. They are smart enough to ruin the fun of the toy with the dry treat, but silly enough not to realize when the peanut buttter is all gone!

My Staffie is the only one of my dogs who will actually chew (and chew and chew and chew) on the kong without any treats in it. He still hasn't destroyed one yet.

I mostly use the kongs to preoccupy my dogs when I am leaving. I put several pieces of processed cheese or lunch meat in the kongs and then put the kongs in the freezer. It takes the dogs about 10 minutes to get all the food out. By that time I am long gone, and they are fine.

One word of warning: don't put the kongs in the dishwater bc they melt a little bit - especially if you have a tied dye designed kong.

I have to say they are great for most dogs, but I bought the blue kong at the vet. (strongest one they make) My dogs distroyed them in 15 mins. flat. Pit bulls have amazing jaws. The only treat that seems to last is real bones.

Are you sure the blue one is the strongest? I have only seen the blue ones for puppies and the black ones as the strongest ones.

YES Kongs are about the ONLY toys that survive with my pits! Although, my female decides about once every six months or so to tear it to pieces. But my male loves to just hold it in his mouth and chew on it. They are affordable enough to replace a few times a year if necessary. I highly recommend Kongs!

Kongs work great with our medium pit bull, O'Shea. He is a mega chewer, and so we went with the XXL size Kongs, and he hasn't destroyed any of them. I will occasionally layer one with peanut butter and special treats (Natural Balance sits well with him, and it's all natural materials, no by-products)...and place it in the freezer for a period of time. He'll work at it for awhile to get the peanut butter out, but sometimes the treats are left behind--guess he's leaving them for later (and he always gets them). :)

With these Kongs, it's important to clean them daily. Otherwise, the dog's slobber leaves them rather slimey and a perfect nesting place for bacteria and germs. After cleaning ours, we like to just hand it back to O'Shea, and he loves licking that water off, and ends up chewing more on it. :)

Raleigh is a big time chewer and the Kongs are the only things with the exception of plastic bottles that last more than a couple hours around our house. I don't even put treats in them anymore because she's entertained enough eating them. She's had the black bone and black original Kong for a couple months now and both are still holding up okay.
My favorite KONG toy is the red ball. She can't destroy it and she loves to play fetch with it.

And for those of you who have pits that eat everything including bedding, we invested in the KONG dog bed and we're going on 5 months with it. It's not the most comfortable for her to lay on, but there's something either in it or the material that makes Raleigh not want to destroy it. I cover it with a blanket and a body pillow (yes, she's spoiled), and she's content to lay on it all night.

Unfortunately my dog can eat any toy known to man. They may last about 2 hours with her working on it the whole time. It tires her out, but a Hartz toy or plush toy is about 2 bites, she shakes the stuffing out and looks at me like what happened.
