Hello fellow Pit Bull lovers 🙂  My name is Katie.  My husband Fred and I just adopted a 1 year old male pit bull from the Animal Rescue League in Berks County, PA.  We named him Willie.  It’s hard for me to understand why some people are so afraid of these dogs.  I guess they have gotten a bad rep over the years.  But we’ve come to learn that it’s definitely the fault of the owners, not the dogs.  Our pit is a big mush.  He loves to be around people and play or just sit with you.  He’s a great companion.  We instantly fell in love with him.  Although it does seem that from still being a young dog and sadly being given up by his last family has left him with separation anxiety.  He gets very upset when we leave and almost always flips his water bowl and has chewed up the plastic ones (we have since gotten metal ones… but that doesn’t stop him from spilling it).  I worry he’s not getting enough to drink and is uncomfortable sitting in his wet bedding all day.  I’m hoping he’ll outgrow this as he comes to know our routine and that we’ll always return… and with age.  But if anyone has advice, it would be greatly appreciated.  I’m very happy this site exists.  Although my husband has adopted a dog in the past… this is a first for me.. and the support helps 🙂

congrats to your newest addition!  I had a pit mix who I brought into my family when he was about 6 weeks old. we found out we were the 3rd “owner” for him and couldn’t ever figure out how he survived being taken away from his mom so young.   But we showed him nothing but love and he ended up having horrible seperation anxiety as well. i couldn’t even crate him because I would come home after an hour or 2 and his snout and paws would be bloody from him trying to escape. he is going on 2 now, and just a few months ago he started getting over the anxiety.  i have heard a few ppl say some out grow it, but some say training will help them get over it

Hey Katie, I’m like you, I can NOT believe the bad rap these dogs have gotten!  Our rescued pit mix is the best behaved dog we’ve had (and the biggest baby! 🙂  Anyway, to your question, have you tried a water bottle that has a nozzle that hangs inside the crate?  That would eliminate the wet bedding.  We found that a Kong filled with peanutbutter or Kong Stuffn and frozen gives them something to do while they are in the crate, just be sure you get one of the large ones.   Let me know how it goes!  Good luck!

Thank you 🙂  Yeah he’s starting to get a little better.  We leave him in a crate when we leave or else he gets very upset from missing us that he jumps up on the door and windows trying to get out.  We found this out the hard way when we came home to the molding on the door torn off and the window pane scratched up.  When left in his crate he cries for a bit and then calms down (we recorded him one day to see how long it goes on for).  Only a couple of minutes.  But I think in that time too is when he flips his water bowl.  We give him a lot of love and kisses when we come home and in the morning.  Was there any other special training you’d do with your dog to help him out?

I did look up getting him a water bottle, but I found the ones I looked at got bad reviews and said they leaked anyway and it was hard for the dog to suck the water out.  Have you tried this?  If so, what kind?  Maybe I’m missing something.  I need to figure something out though, poor guy is so thirsty when we get home b/c I think he’s flipping it over very soon after we leave leaving him with nothing for the day 🙁  Thanks for the advice.
