Do you happen to know the brands of collars you use? I know the nylon used on some will cause a reaction to a dog’s skin…but we use what’s called a Premiere collar. It doesn’t have buckles, which is nice, and doesn’t fit tight against the skin, but if they pull at all, it will fit up snugly against them (and it’s not as harsh as one with buckles would be). Hope you’re able to find something that helps! You never want to see your lovely pet in pain. I’ll be thinking of you! 🙂

    Madeline,
I usually just use a choke chain and it doesn’t seem to bother them. I use an otmeal shampoo on my two pits to moisturize their skin and i don’t bath them frequently. Also my vet told me to use Revolution if they have super sensitve skin like mine. Revolution is better for dogs and cats with skin allergies. It may seem like it cost more and you can only get it from a vet cause it is also a heartworm prevetative too. I prim exam is to day it cost me $8 for Heartguard and $16 for Frontline. One dose of Revolution for one of my dogs is no more than $20. I will tell you though Frontline covers more types of ticks than Revolution does. My mom uses it cause they take the dogs camping. So if your area is prone to ticks I would stay with frontline but just and FYI about Revolution.

I just recently have begun to notice our dog itching around his neck and under his chin–we thought it was his collar, so we decided to buy another one…something a little softer and doesn’t hug his neck too tight. We started taking his collar off when he’s in the house. The area where his collar sits appears to be getting better…but the area under his chin and just above his neck–in very close proximity to each other–he has to be itching it somehow (we’ve never seen him itch this area), but it’s red, irritated, and I can see where his fur has been rubbed off. I’m making an appt today to see the vet…but is there a particular shampoo/medicine that others have used for possible allergies?

@Rebecca: Our Aussie shepherd has something very similar, except she has a skin condition called dermatitis. It’s basically the skin’s reaction to something they’re allergic too. The first thing you want to do is rule out what they’re having an allergic reaction tot. Change their food, if they sleep on any of your clothes, your bed, anything that is washed, change your laundry soap and dryer sheets. A common allergy for dogs is being allergic to beef; sounds crazy, but it is. If they get any treats/table scraps, completely stop giving them some for a few weeks. If you want to narrow it down, change something only once a week or two weeks and see how they react. No change means it’s something else.
The vet is probably going to tell you the same thing, and perhaps prescribe some medication for the infection from the itching.

Good luck! We’ve had our Aussie for 9 years and still haven’t figured out what she’s allergic too, even after numerous changes to her diet and our laundry, etc and so forth. To make her comfortable we use any shampoo with oatmeal in it or anything that the label states for “sensitive” skin.

The vet did say it could be a reaction to something he may be allergic to–he did give him a shot that should stop the irritation/itching, but if it doesn’t, to bring him back in. He had a skin scraping done, but no fleas-ticks-mites. 🙂 He’s a healthy boy–but his skin thing is a mystery! I just bought some shampoo with oatmeal/aloe in it (about $12/bottle), and I think that’ll help soothe his skin when we do give him a bath again (he just had one recently, in the past week or so). But he does sometimes sleep on our clothes–we’ve left things out for him when we’re gone, so I’ll see about switching to a different detergent. Is there a particular one that dogs seem to have a lesser reaction to? Right now we’re using Arm and Hammer liquid stuff. He has been on a new dog food for almost a month now, but if this itching/loss of hair doesn’t go away, we’ll be going to an even better dog food (what a sensitive pup we have, lol). Thanks for your comments!! I hope Aussie is doing well!

    Hi Madeline,

Our Foster had a nylon Hamilton Collar on when we brought her homefrom the shelter. When we gave her a bath, I noticed that the collar had been rubbing the front of her neck raw.

I went to Target and got a chain collar for about $5.00 and it is working out really well. Her neck can breathe and I can give her guidance through the collar. She seems to like it a lot better.
I got a face wash when I took the old collar off!
