Hey guys! I want to get advice about my 2 pits, Raleigh and Atticus. Since bringing Atticus home 3 weeks, Raleigh has really taken to him. Initially it was rough but after 1 incident, they’ve been inseperable. Wherever one goes, the other one follows.

Here’s my dilema. I’ve been home with them the past 3 weeks but I’m a teacher and I start back to work next Thursday. I’m gone from roughly 6:30 until 3:30-4pm each day. Two nights a week I go to graduate school. I’ve read about crate and rotate but I’m not sure how I feel about leaving either of them in the crate for that long. They’ve done really well together outside and I’m just wondering if anyone else leaves their pits outside together? I would be crating the puppy, Atticus, more often than Raleigh because of the size of the crate and because she’s house-trained. I hate the idea that he’s laying around all day after sleeping all night (not in the crate though). I want him to be able to be up and active. I’ve thought about leaving him in my laundry room or bathroom but fear the destruction that he could cause. I honestly think the two of them would be okay outside because they really don’t play together when they’re out there. They tend to do their own thing and because he isn’t trained on the invisible fence (we have a real fence too!) he is able to retreat to areas that are off-limits to Raleigh.

What do y’all suggest? I know the risks but I’m wondering if I should at least try putting them out there. Maybe for a couple hours at a time?

I had the same problem somewhat. I use to work part-time so I was home by 1pm everyday and had the weekends off. In June I started working full-time and I’m getting divorced. So I have no other choice but to leave them home. I do live close to work so I take my lunch hour to go home eat and let them out for about an hour. I keep being told they are just dogs they will be fine. But to me they are my children and I really feel guilty if I have to go to the store or something when I get home from work and have to crate them again. Finally now that it is August they are starting to get use to it.

As for leaving them outside it depends on where you live to be honest. I live in Lima, Ohio. I have to have insurance on my home for them, and if they are outside in a fenced in area it must be 6ft tall and a lock on the gate! I have a 4ft fence and no lock but Kira actually did jump the fence oneday when my ex husband went back inside. She hasn’t sense. Kira digs really bad you should see my yard its horrible. My only concern for you would be people walking by kids tormenting them or even adults. I personally wouldn’t do it even if I had a 6ft. fence. They will get use to being crated. I went and trusted mine for a couple of days loose in the house and the first day was great I was so impressed I praised them like crazy when I got home. Then the next time they stayed loose it was horrible. So they get crated anytime I leave. I try to exercise them every evening and they seem to be happy.

I’ve got a 6 or 7 foot wooden fence with a gate w/lock on it. In addition, I have an invisble fence that runs the perimeter of my property. I’m not worried about them getting out because if they do, they’ll probably end up in another yard since all the yards around me share part of my fence in someway.
I’m mostly concerned about the two of them togehter. They do play a little rough but not in a vicious way. They don’t have territorial issues or anything like that as long as there are plenty of toys for both of them, multiple food/water bowls for them, etc…

Do I take a chance on them? I just feel guilty for leaving either one of them crated for long periods. I can’t come home for lunch and I work 30+ minutes from home. I don’t want to burden my neighbors either by asking them to rotate them in and out of the yard.

I would not reccommend having the dogs left in the yard. It is too risky. You may end up in a situation you do not want to be in. Even though you will have lots of toys to play with, what happens when both dogs want the same toy and no adult is there to supervise? What if someone enters your fence? No fence is an absolute safety zone. Kids always find a way to climb it, especially if they know there are doggies behind the fence they can “play with”. IMO I would crate them when away and make sure they get a lot of playtime/exercise when you are home. Maybe you can hire a dog walker you trust to come in and walk the dogs. It’s better to be safe then sorry.

I would totally agree with Taana’s post. They will be ok crated. I feel gulity too when I crate mine all day. But they are doing ok. I exercise them everyday when I get home and they are happy. It will be fine.
